How Millennials Discover Colleges in 2025 [Research]

Table of Contents

Millennials are a generation shaped by transition. They came of age during a period when information was transitioning online, and when technological advancements began to redefine how people learn, work, connect, and evaluate the information around them. These shifts, combined with major economic events, have made them thoughtful and discerning learners who expect clear value from higher education.

Before making a decision, they want proof that a degree will lead to better job opportunities, higher salaries, greater flexibility, and overall better outcomes in their professional lives.

What defines millennials most is their relentless desire for improvement. As a generation, they were raised to view higher education as the most reliable path to stability and self-discovery, and even after years of economic uncertainty and shifting job markets, that belief remains deeply rooted. Known as one of the most educated generations, 47% of those who have already pursued higher education feel that they made the right choice and would make the same decision again.

In 2025, these traits influence every stage of their college search process, starting from Awareness and Discovery. Millennials turn to traditional and AI search engines, social platforms, official websites, and online forums to explore educational outcomes and assess value.

Our goal was to gain a clear understanding of where each generation begins their search, how they explore their options, and what ultimately helps them feel confident in their decision. During this process, we identified the most important behaviors, patterns, and motivations that shape how Millennials discover, evaluate, and validate colleges today.

The findings serve as a practical starting point for higher ed marketers who want to engage with Millennial students earlier in their journey and provide them with information that reflects what they are already seeking.

Methodology

Our large-scale quantitative research study, conducted in the second quarter of 2025, examined how students discover, evaluate, and select their college options. More than 1,500 recently enrolled students participated, with each segment (undergraduate students, graduate students, and adult learners) contributing over 500 responses.

This structure ensured a statistically significant sample, enabling comparisons across students of different

  • Learning modalities (online, hybrid, on-campus),
  • Demographic groups (Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, First-Generation Students)

What we looked for:

  • How are students navigating the college search process?
  • Which platforms do these students use at different stages of their search for a college?
  • What weight do students place on traditional search engines compared with emerging sources of information?
  • What prompts students to move from one platform to another during their college search?

Although almost 40% of millennials already hold a higher education degree, a significant number continue to pursue further education. Some are beginning undergraduate programs later in life, while others are returning to further enhance their professional outcomes.

Millennials are open to exploring new options

In 2025, the college discovery journey for 25% of millennials begins with a specific school already in mind, and they are more likely to choose that same institution in the end.

The majority, however, either start with one school in mind but remain open to exploring other options (26%) or begin their journey without a preferred school in mind (20%)

What makes this particularly noteworthy is that many of these students are working professionals and community members with competing demands on their time. Yet, they are still willing to devote meaningful effort to finding the college or program that feels right for them. They are motivated by a genuine desire to make an informed decision.

For higher education institutions, this creates a critical opportunity to influence their early and final decision-making moments. Since many millennial students are not tied to a single brand or name, they are actively discovering, evaluating, and questioning any college-related information they encounter.

Showing up where they search, answering the questions they are asking, reflecting their values with clarity, and engaging authentically will allow you to reach potential students who may have never heard of your institution before but are open to discovering and evaluating it now.

This mix of curiosity for new opportunities and knowledge of the digital world and processes shapes how millennial students discover colleges in 2025.

Millennials take an omnichannel approach to college discovery

When millennials begin searching for a college in 2025, their process looks more like an ongoing cycle of discovery and validation rather than a linear journey. They have grown up in an environment where information is everywhere, which has made them skilled at discerning what feels credible and what does not. Rather than trusting a single source, they construct their own version of the truth by comparing what they find across multiple platforms.

Millennials have spent most of their lives learning how to cross-check, compare, and synthesize information independently, and they bring that same self-directed mindset to the college search process. This behavior is reflected in the State of College Search 2025 findings, which show that 94% of millennial students use multiple platforms throughout their college search journey.

They are unwilling to rely on a single source of information because they understand how digital content is shaped, and they prefer to piece together their own version of the truth before committing to something as significant as an academic investment.

This constant movement between channels suggests that, in higher education, no single touchpoint holds enough influence to guide students entirely through the early stages of their college search journey. Instead, only a unified and consistent presence across platforms will create effective opportunities for students to discover you when they are searching for guidance.

Traditional search engines dominate the college search process

Millennials have spent more than two decades using and building trust in traditional search engines, and many of them continue to view it as the most efficient way to gather broad, initial information about colleges and universities.

For 28% of this student segment, traditional search engines serve as the foundation of their college discovery process, helping them establish a baseline understanding before they move on to more specific or interactive channels.

When a millennial student begins their college search on Google, they are looking for information they can trust. Their first searches are often broad and open-ended, such as “best colleges for business” or “how much does college cost,” which help them build a general understanding of their options before deciding where to look more closely. These early queries help them identify which institutions appear credible and relevant enough to explore further.

For universities, this first point of contact carries more influence than many realize. Being visible in these early searches means being part of the student’s initial frame of reference. That presence often determines which colleges remain under consideration later in the process.  Institutions that prioritize visibility and clarity in traditional search results signal reliability and confidence. These two qualities resonate deeply with millennial learners who have grown used to filtering noise and identifying credible information quickly.

The most effective approach at this stage is to build content that answers students’ earliest questions with honesty and depth. Pages that explain program outcomes, costs, timelines, and career prospects create trust and demonstrate that the institution respects the student’s need for straightforward information.

When you make it easy to find meaningful answers, students begin to form a relationship grounded in transparency. Each accurate and helpful result reinforces the perception of credibility and keeps your university present throughout the student’s decision-making process.

Millennials turn to trusted, data-driven sources early in the college search process

Official college websites and college search platforms serve as trusted, authoritative sources for millennial students at the Awareness and Discovery stage.

Approximately 25% of these students visit official college websites early in the process, often because they are already somewhat familiar with the institution’s name. For these students, the website serves as a validation tool, where they can confirm details they’ve heard elsewhere, explore the college’s programs and campus culture, and gain a deeper understanding of what makes the school unique.

Additionally, around 14% of millennial students utilize college search platforms to access structured information. These students often seek objective data, such as rankings, acceptance rates, tuition costs, graduation rates, and program-specific statistics, to discover which institutions come up as the most relevant. This data-driven approach helps them prioritize which colleges are worth deeper exploration.

Together, these behaviors highlight that millennial students rely heavily on both official sources and trusted third-party platforms to balance subjective impressions with objective information. Official websites provide the narrative and details of the college experience, while college search platforms enable deeper analysis, guiding students toward informed decisions early in their academic journey.

Millennials Are Leaning Toward AI Search Engines Over Social Media

As a generation known for fully embracing digital advancements, it is no surprise that millennial students have begun relying on AI search engines during their college discovery process.

More specifically, findings from the State of College Search 2025 reveal that millennials are now using AI search engines (12%) slightly more than social media (10%) when discovering colleges.

For millennials balancing full-time work and family commitments, with ongoing professional development, time is often their most limited resource. This is why 43% of students from this generation identify speed and convenience as the primary reasons for turning to AI during their college discovery process. They view these tools as a means to simplify research and interpret information more efficiently, helping them to transition from discovery to other decision-making stages with greater confidence.

For higher education institutions, this trend highlights the importance of being discoverable and accurately represented in AI search engines. When a generation that values precision and clarity begins to favor AI over social platforms, higher ed institutions that invest in structuring and optimizing their content for AI interpretation will have a distinct advantage.

Online Forums Are a Niche but Powerful Influence in College Choices

Online forums remain a smaller but influential part of the millennial college discovery process, with around 8% of students turning to these spaces when searching for and discovering institutions and programs. Although this percentage may appear modest compared to traditional or AI search engines, the influence of online forums lies in the type of engagement they encourage.

Millennials who visit online forums, such as Reddit, are actively seeking clarity and firsthand perspectives that official sources cannot fully provide. The appeal of online forums at this stage, therefore, lies in their conversational and exploratory nature. In these early interactions, their goal is to understand possibilities and to build confidence in navigating a process that is often complicated.

For colleges and universities, recognizing the exploratory role of forums means understanding that influence begins long before a student ever searches for a specific institution by name. Institutions that are mentioned organically in these early conversations benefit from exposure at a point when students are still forming their mental shortlist.

Making accurate, student-centered information easily accessible online and encouraging authentic alumni or student participation in public discussions helps ensure that the college is represented fairly in these spaces. Even a brief, positive mention during this early stage can prompt further exploration, turning casual curiosity into genuine interest later in the journey.

Actionable Recommendations for Higher Ed Marketers

Millennial students approach college discovery with both digital experience and informational skepticism. They know how to evaluate sources, cross-check information, and detect bias. They also expect clarity, convenience, and authenticity at every stage of the process. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for higher education marketers.

Reaching them effectively requires understanding not just where they search, but why they search there, whether it’s to validate facts on official websites, gather context from AI, or find peer truth in online forums. The colleges that earn their trust early are those that connect precision with authenticity and consistency across every platform.

Here is how higher ed institutions can act on these insights:

  • Optimize your content for every stage of the student discovery journey. Ensure your program pages and key content address the questions students have at the Awareness and Discovery stage, to gain visibility across both traditional and AI search platforms.
  • Strengthen your AI presence by creating content that reads naturally, answers direct questions, and provides concise, factual summaries.
  • Maintain consistent messaging across channels to ensure that key facts, such as tuition, program length, and admission requirements, are accurately represented on your website, search listings, and third-party platforms.
  • Utilize online forums strategically by regularly monitoring Reddit and similar spaces to gain insight into how your institution is perceived. Use these insights to address recurring concerns on your official channels and to inform future messaging.
  • Design content for speed and clarity since millennials value efficiency. Use concise paragraphs, straightforward language, and clear next steps. Eliminate unnecessary friction in navigation.
  • Turn visibility into trust by ensuring every touchpoint, from an AI summary to a Reddit mention, reinforces credibility through accuracy, transparency, and a student-centered approach.
